SOCIOLOGIC EFFECTS OF TECHNICAL INNOVATION

[摘要] The [inventions that led to] provision of light from central sources changed the nature of the home and the individual's relation to society. . .The erosion of domestic autonomy over light began with the introduction of the gaslight early in the 19th century. That replaced the domestic oil lamp. . .and bound each household to the "gas works." The introduction of gaslight virtually coincided with the beginning of impersonal mass transportation in the form of railroads. Instead of traveling as groups of individuals in horse-drawn carriages, rail passengers were carried like pneumatic parcels through a landscape they never touched.
