Departments of Pediatrics

[摘要] Petersdorf has recently described "Departments of Medicine 1973."1 What are the similarities and differences in Pediatrics? More important, which facets should we be trying to change? It seems useful to make a personal assessment looking back over ten years as a Pediatric Department chairman. The view is therefore very myopic. My hope is to stimulate debate and change where appropriate.In Medicine Petersdorf's opinion is that teaching "load" is heavy. The senior faculty are away or in the laboratory, electives are of poor quality, and the scattering of students to many sites makes more structure necessary. In Pediatrics these points are also generally true but not to the same degree.
