TEMPORARY IDIOPATHIC NEONATAL HYPERGLYCEMIA
[摘要] The first case of temporary idiopathic neonatal hyperglycemia in an African infant from South Africa is reported. The condition presented with glycosuria, hyperglycemia, and acetonuria in a dysmature infant with a respiratory infection. The hyperglycemia disappeared by some 20 days later, without the use of insulin and in spite of recurrent pulmonary infections. The presence of dysmaturity and acetonuria, or the insulin requirement, do not differentiate between true diabetes mellitus and temporary hyperglycemia. The etiology of temporary hyperglycemia may be related to the normal postnatal involution of pancreatic islet cell tissue. The indications for insulin administration in the newborn with high blood sugar levels are failure to thrive, failure to maintain hydration, and persistent acidosis. Insulin should be given intravenously.
