USE OF AMINO ACIDS AS DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS
[摘要] A PREVIOUS Commentary on this subject (Pediatrics, 17:965, 1956) concluded that amino acid imbalance is "readily produced by an excess of lysine" and that its use as a supplement should not be generally accepted until there is convincing evidence for the need and for the safety of this practice. It should be carefully noted that two requirements must be satisfied before supplementation of the diet with an amino acid can be justified—it must certainly be harmless but it must also be beneficial. The place of amino acid supplementation in practical human nutrition has continued to attract the attention of scientists and commercial enterprises. Authoritative guidance in this important and complex field has just been made available in a comprehensive report of the Committee on Amino Acids of the Food and Nutrition Board, National Research Council.
