MORTALITY FROM VARICELLA IN CHILDREN RECEIVING ADRENOCORTICOSTEROIDS AND ADRENOCORTICOTROPIN

[摘要] Forty-four cases of varicella infection in patients receiving adrenocorticotropin or adrenocorticosteroids have been reviewed. Six patients died, all except one of whom suffered from leukemia. In view of the reported deaths from varicella in individuals with diseases other than leukemia who were receiving adrenocorticosteroids, it is concluded that these drugs may increase the mortality from varicella. However, the findings reported in this review indicate that many of the deaths from varicella infection that occur in patients receiving adrenocorticosteroids are more likely due to the effects on immune mechanisms by underlying disease rather than the administered adrenocorticosteroids.
