OCCURRENCE OF PNEUMOCYSTIS CARINII PNEUMONIA IN CHILDREN WITH AGAMMAGLOBULINEMIA

[摘要] Two case histories of patients having apparent congenital agammaglobulinemia who succumbed to Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia are presented. The high incidence of agammaglobulinemia or extreme hypogammaglobulinemia among patients with Pneumocystis pneumonia in Great Britain, Canada and the United States is stressed. The absence or gross deficiency of plasma cells in the pulmonary lesions and in the hematopoietic tissues of the children having agammaglobulinemia and Pneumocystis carinii infection is contrasted to the extensive plasmacytosis occurring in most children succumbing to infection due to this organism. The use of Giemsa staining of imprints from fresh or previously frozen pulmonary tissue as an ideal method for demonstrating the parasite is emphasized.
