Mastering Precepting: A Nurse’s Handbook for Success

[摘要] Ask nurses who has had the biggest impact on their nursing career and they are likely to share a story about a preceptor who helped guide them through the choppy waters of working in a new environment and shared his/her clinical expertise and wisdom. Sadly, nurses will also share experiences about ineffective preceptors. Onboarding and orienting nurses who are new to a clinical environment, whether new to a specialty or new to a unit or hospital, is a vital component to retaining an engaged and integrated nursing staff. Preceptors are the linchpin to a successful transition for new nurses. Yet, all too often, excellent, expert clinical nurses are put in the position of functioning as a preceptor without any preparation or support. Mastering Precepting is a resource for nurses who want to become a preceptor; it provides the knowledge these nurses need to learn how to interact with new nurses to facilitate their successful integration into the unit and the organization.
