The Crisis of Infinity:Mathematics, Philosophy, and Nineteenth-Century Poetry.
[摘要] The Crisis of Infinity: Mathematics, Philosophy, and Nineteenth-Century Poetry argues that Romantic aesthetic theories, and in particular formulations of the sublime, participate in prior mathematical debates about the nature and reality of infinity. The dissertation asks what this means for our understanding of Romantic poetry and its afterlives, and demonstrates how understanding this connection can facilitate new readings of nineteenth-century poems.Beyond providing a productive method for reading nineteenth-century poetry in intellectual-historical context, the dissertation explores how understanding the link between Romantic literature and debates about infinity can contribute to literary-critical discourse on subjects ranging from the Romantic archive to the Romantic inheritance in later modern poetry.
