[摘要] Directus is a Web site sponsored by Informed CME Learning, a nonprofit organization started in 1972 to promote the continuing education of physicians. The Web site is approved by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME). Most states require physicians to earn a minimum of approximately 50–100 ACCME-approved CME credits per year to maintain a medical license. One credit corresponds to approximately 1 h of training. This requirement has been implemented by state medical boards to help insure that after completing their formal medical education physicians maintain their competence and gain new knowledge in their specialty. CME requirements are also meant to promote lifelong learning as a means to being an effective physician. There is obviously a great need for CME in laboratory medicine, because of the many ongoing technical advances and new medical knowledge of diagnostic testing.Any good physician will, of course, independently pursue new opportunities for learning, and during the practice of his or her discipline physicians are involved on a daily basis in acquiring new knowledge and expertise. Such situations are often the most effective way to learn, because they typically involve practical issues and the participant is actively engaged in the process. It is difficult, however, to claim CME credits for this type of self-directed activity, because of the formal requirements and documentation needed for CME credits.
