[摘要] This fatal case of hyperphosphatemia with hypocalcemia in an elderly patient after administration of sodium phosphate enemas highlights the potential risks of these commonly used bowel cleansers. Under normal conditions, phosphorus can be readily excreted by the kidneys. Hyperphosphatemia stimulates parathyroid hormone secretion, which has a phosphaturic effect on the kidneys.
