[摘要] The stretch of California road known as Highway 9 cuts a treacherous path as it winds through the Santa Cruz mountains—all narrow lanes, cliff-hugging turns, and steep drop offs. Back in the late 1960s, when they were dating, Greg and Gail Miller would get into his MGA convertible, his pride and joy, and take it for a spin on the infamous highway. Miller, who has loved cars for as long as he can remember, took the sinuous curves in his stride, working the gas pedal as much as the brake to keep the car on the road.“We had some definitely scary moments where we would spin out,” she said. “I used to tell everybody, ‘If he kills me, let him kill us both because otherwise my father will.’” The first time Miller met Gail's parents, he drove up in his beloved car, which had a crack across the passenger side of the windshield. Gail's mother raced over and said, ‘Did my daughter's head do that?’ “She was quite nervous about that sports car,” said Gail.Love may have been blind during their early courtship years but married now for 46 years, Gail understands exactly what was going on in Miller's mind during those spin outs. “I didn't ask him then, but at this point in time, I certainly know what he was thinking: ‘Hmmm… I wonder just where I should have let up to keep that from happening.’ He always analyzes how close he can get to the edge, to keep from crossing over the line, meaning the edge of control of the car,” she said.Part of the allure may be genetic and Miller has three brothers, two of whom are risk takers.
