MODULATION OF BICHROMATIC WAVE TRAIN IN A WAVE TANK

[摘要] The instability of bichromatic wave train in water of intermediate depth is investigated by means of a perturbation method. The analytical solution, treated as the result of an initial value problem, yields the modulation and disintegration of the wave train, caused by the interaction of two incident waves of finite amplitude. A laboratory study was also conducted to measure the surface elevations of bichromatic waves generated by several types of compound sinusoidal signals. The calculation using the third-order finite-amplitude wave equation is carried out, and its prediction is compared with the measured data obtained under several experimental conditions.
