[摘要] English: On the obvious assumption that a cultural gap exists betweenthe audience of the drama Everyman in the 14th and 21stcenturies, a suitable translation of Everyman was isnecessary in order to make this play accessible to the 21stcentury Southern Sotho speaking people. This mini-thesisprovides the suitable translation of Everyman in theSouthern Sotho context. The main framework within which thestudy is conducted is Nord's functionalist approach totranslation which implies that greater emphasis is placed onthe target text rather than on the source text. Thetranslation is rendered possible by certain instruments, namely the translation strategies. These translationstrategies are applied at both the macro and micro textuallevels. Translation strategies at the macro level imply theoverall translation strategies for the translation. Thesestrategies include the word-for-word translation, faithfultranslation, literal translation, semantic translation, idiomatic translation, free translation and adaptation. Theoverall translation strategy chosen in the case of Everymanis adaptation. Translation strategies at the microleveldeal with the transference of culture-specific items atdifferent levels of a text i.e word, phrase, sentence andtextual levels. These strategies include transference, cultural substitution, domestication, mutation, specif ica tion, and transposi tion. Through theseinstruments, the functional translation of Everyman intoSouthern Sotho has been achieved
