This Month’s Highlights

[摘要] BMSC exhibit a remarkable ability to differentiate into a wide variety of cell types. In vivo studies have shown that in the glomerulus BMSC can differentiate into mesangial cells and possibly podocytes. In this issue of JASN, Perry et al. study the differentiation of BMSC in vitro when grown on different matrices. Their results suggest that BMSC express markers consistent with differentiation toward a podocyte phenotype, especially when they are grown on type IV collagen. These studies further bolster the possibility that stem cell therapy for glomerular diseases may someday be feasible. See Perry et al., pages 66–76.
