One of the newer types of composite bridge construction, in common use today, involves the use of precast prestressed concrete panels which span between longitudinal girders and act as formwork and support for the cast-inplace deck (Fig. 1). This type of bridge has been studied previously,1-6 and has generally performed well. Typically, 3 in. (76 mm) prestressing strand extensions project from the sides f the panels (Fig. 1).
