A study is reported on the transfer of force between reinforcing bars and pretensioned strand, such as is necessary in some cases at the ends of pretensioned prestressed concrete members. The variables included in the study were the size of reinforcing bar. the lap length between the reinforcing bars and the strand, and the use of spiral reinforcement around the strand and reinforcing bars. Failure was due to bond slip on the strand and tension failure of the concrete at the end of the embedded reinforcement. An expression is proposed relating the required lap length to the force to be transferred, the cross section of the reinforcement and of the concrete surrounding it, and the strength of the concrete. A numerical example shows how the proposed design method can be applied.
