One of the most striking features of the nearly C$1 billion Vancouver Advanced Light Rapid Tranzit (ALRT) system is the aerial guideway. This 16 km (10 miles) long ribbon of the track profile with long spans, in-depth crossheads and a minimum visual impact on the urban areas through which it passes.
In Part 1 of this report, the project engineer provides the background leading to the selection of the structural system and gives an overview of the design features of the structure and the major precast prestressed components.
In Part 2, the precaster discusses the production, quality control, post-tensioning operations, transportation, and erection of the more than 1000 precast prestressed beams used in the project.
The aerial guideway system is now fully operational.
