The stability and handling stresses of long span prestressed concrete bridge beams are discussed. Special attention is given to the location oflifting points, shipping supports, effect of road conditions (impact) and superelevation (beam tilt). Various bracing systems are discussed and new proposals are put forth. A suggested analytical procedure is presented whereby a long span bridge beam can be designed for stability during handling and shipping. To illustrate the method, a sample design of a 136 ft (41.5 rn) long PCt 72 in.(1829 mm) bulb T bridge beam for handling and shipping is included.
