As the local traveiway center and gateway to Mexico City, Querétaro was badly in need of a modern bus terminal. Initially, the project was conceived in cast-in-place concrete but it was soon realized that a precast, prestressed concrete system would reduce the overall cost by 20 percent and speed up construction significantly. A variety of precast components were used including inverted tee beams, rectangular beams, sloped double tees and conventional double tees. The resulting $12.5 million structure is a magnificent facility with all the modern conveniences as well as being a model to other cities. This article discusses the design considerations, design features, and construction highlights of the project.
