The Maryland Department of Transportation, through its Mass Transit Administration (MTA) branch, is presently building a rapid rail transit system in the Baltimore area with the assistance of the Urban Mass Transportation Administration (UMTA). Construction of the first 8-mile (13 km) section of this project is approximately 60 percent complete and is scheduled to be operational by late 1982. The estimated cost of the first section is $768 million. An at-grade 6-mile (9.6 km) extension of the rail system is now being designed.
