Precast, prestressed double tees provided the structural and economical solution for a unique, single span, garden plaza bridge uniting a private school campus in Los Angeles, California. Eleven double tees, 5 ft wide by 32?/2 in. deep (1.52 m x 826 mm), span 49 ft (14.94 m). Although this structure is a pedestrian bridge, the design live load is AASHTO HS-20 for emergency vehicles. Double tees provided the necessary strength, shallow structure depth and fast, scaffold-free construction. This article presents the design concept and structural design considerations required to build this project.
