Growing Types of Mint Varieties in Warm Region in Relation to their Physiological and Ecological Characteristics : II Difference of drought resistance among the growing types

[摘要] Experiments were performed in 1955-1956 to find out the relation between the drought resistance and the growing type of Japanese mint varieties classified by the authors. The following characteristics were contribute to the drought resistance of mint varieties. (1) Growing type : The varieties of Main stem type showed the general tendency to develope the root vertically. (2) Tall plant height : An almost linear relation between the plant height and the depth of main root system was recognized. (3) Rapid growth immediately after the 1st harvest : It seemed advantageous to develope the root deep before dry season. (4) High content of hydrophilic colloids. These points will provide a practical index useful for selecting drought resistant variety of Japanese mint.
