4]. This increase is almost entirely attributable to an increase in the incidence of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC), which is the most common type of thyroid cancer. The American Thyroid Association (ATA) first published treatment guidelines for patients with thyroid nodule and differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC; including PTC) in 1996 and has since updated the guidelines in 2006 and 2009. The updated guidelines reflect the changing evidence from quality studies, and there have been significant advances in the diagnosis and therapy of DTC during this time.
