125th anniversary of The Geological Society of America: Looking at the past and into the future of science at GSA

[摘要] In the 125th year of TheGeological Society of America, it is appropriate to look at the pastaccomplishments and the future of the Society. With this comes theunderstanding that it is through curiosity-driven geoscience, whose promotionand communication are hallmarks of GSA, that strides are made in understandingresources, hazards, the global environment, and the factors that influence oursurvival on planet Earth. Over the years, these advances have come fromdeductive reasoning based on new and accumulated field and laboratoryobservations and theoretical modeling, which are continuously taken to newlevels by incorporating the latest scientific technology. With this in mind, weexamine advances in understanding the origin of mountain belts in the contextof the formation and evolution of Earth as our governing concepts have evolvedfrom geosynclinal theory to plate interactions and continental collisions toconcepts of continental lithospheric growth and destruction by processes likelower crustal and lithospheric delamination and forearc subduction erosion.
