Institutional impediments to growth in the mining sector in South Africa
[摘要] TheSouthAfricanminingsector,oncethebedrockoftheeconomy,hasbeenindeclinethiscenturywhileothercountrieshaveexperiencedgrowthinthissector.TheminingsectorinSouthAfricamakesasignificantcontributiontotheSouthAfricaneconomythroughdirectandindirectjobs,taxes,royalties,skillsdevelopmentandforeignexchangerevenue.Thedeclineofthissectorisconcerninggivenitspotentialforemployment,taxesandforeignexchangeinaSouthAfricaingreatneedofallthree.Gold,PGMs1,coalandiron-‐oreaccountforabout81%ofSouthAfrica'sminingoutput.Theprice,demandandproductionofthesefourcommoditiesinthe21stcenturywillbeestablishedasabenchmarkandSouthAfrica'sproductionwillbetestedagainstthis.Mixedmethodresearchusingsecondaryquantitativedataandaqualitativesurveywillbeutilisedtotestthehypotheses.Quantitativesecondarydataisusedtoestablishpriceandproductiontrends.AqualitativesurveyconductedwithkeystakeholdersintheminingsectoridentifiesopinionsandreasonsfortheSouthAfricanminingtrends.Thisstudyconfirmstheimportantroleofinstitutionsincreatingcertaintyandencouraginginvestment.
