'n Streeksgeskiedenis oor die kusdorpe in die Strandveld van die Overberg, circa. 1940-1994
[摘要] ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The coastal region of the Strandveld between the villages of Gansbaai and Witsand has a history of human activity which dates back 3000 years. The first human inhabitants who lived in the region were Khoi-Khoi and Strandloper communities. The first European decendents moved into the region by 1831. The Europeans were granted loan farms in the area. Over the next 150 years, the coastal region of the Strandveld evolved from farms into towns and villages. Although a lot has been written on regional history in South Africa, histories on coastal regions seems to bein the minority. Other books and documentation containing historical information has been written on some of the towns in the region, but only offers information on a specific town or village and not the region as a whole. This thesis discusses a regional history of the coastal towns in the Strandveld in the period between 1940 and 1994. Furthermore, this thesis investigates three important aspects. Firstly, focus is being placed on the prehistory of the region. The existance of the towns and villages in the region is being discussed in this part. Secondly, the exploitation of ocean marine sources in the region is being examined. This section contains a discussion about the role played by subsistancefishermen, commercial fishermen and sport fishermen on the coastal region of the Strandveld. Finally, the study also includes a discussion of political as well as cultural changes which took place in the region and what impact it had on the Strandveld's future existance.
