[摘要] ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study was undertaken to explore the lived experiences of parents' need forsupport regarding their son. He has a dual diagnosis of Down Syndrome and AutisticSpectrum Disorder.The parents volunteered to take part in a research program funded by a privateindividual. The purpose of the project, coordinated by the Department of EducationalPsychology of the University of Stellenbosch, was to evaluate the effectiveness ofthe intervention program over a period of 26 weeks. The intensive interventionaltered the family's usual activities in many ways and the question soon arose as tohow the parents experience support.A literature review was conducted in order to obtain a perspective of research donein this field. I fulfilled the dual role of researcher and trainee educational psychologist.The interpretive research framework lent itself to interpreting the lived experiences ofthe parents. Their experiences were gathered from interviews, a questionnaire,observation and reflection.This research report describes a variety of possible experiences the parentsunderwent, and identifies possible guidelines for the development of a supportprogram. Suggestions were made as to how an educational psychologist could serveto support parents.
