The location shall be called Kaya Mandi : a history of Kaya Mandi

[摘要] ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Throughout South Africa there has been a greater emphasis on townshiphistory in recent years. However little has been written about the townships ofthe Western Cape. This research about the history of Kaya Mandi issubsequently one of the first of its kind and provides unique insights into aworld that has not garnered much attention. Due to the fact that there hasbeen little research done on the subject, a considerable amount of informationwas gathered through archival research. Additionally, oral testimonies ofindividuals who, in some cases, have lived their entire lives in Kaya Mandihave been invaluable. Books, theses and articles were primarily used asguidelines to provide additional context and understanding within the greaterpicture of South African history. The only exception was the use of themaster.s thesis, Bantoegesinne in Kaya Mandi, done by Cornelia Drotske in1956 which provided information from that period. As a result of this researchthe history of Kaya Mandi may be regarded as much more complex then hadpreviously been assumed. Kaya Mandi has not just been a passive location inthe Western Cape subject to the whims of those in power. Instead, theystruggled to maintain their culture and often their very existence. At times thismeant a battle between the people and the local government and other timesit meant a battle from within, between the different segments of Kaya Mandiitself. Researching the history of Kaya Mandi provided an understanding ofhow it came to be what it is today. It also gave a deeper comprehension of thecurrent issues and situations facing the people. This is especially important formaking informed decisions regarding necessary development and expansion.Overall Kaya Mandi is a microcosm of township life in the Western Cape andthe current research has highlighted the complexity of these communities andthe necessity for further research.
