Lui jaune, elle blanche: les couples mixtes, l'identité et l'interculturalité dans Nam et Sylvie de Pham Duy Khiêm et Homme jaune et femme blanche de Christiane Fournier
[摘要] ENGLISH ABSTRACT : Pham Duy Khiêm, who belonged to the first generation of Vietnamese francophone writers, published Nam et Sylvie in 1957. The novel describes the difficulties that mixed-race couples, especially between Vietnamese men and French women, faced during the colonial period.Christiane Fournier, a French novelist who lived in Indochina in the 1930s, published anovel, entitled Homme jaune et femme blanche (1933), about French-Vietnamese interracialrelationships. This thesis explores the circumstances of mixed-race couples, especially as asymbol of social integration in a foreign country, which is interlinked with questions ofidentity and interculturality. As its point of departure, this study analyses the differencebetween a Vietnamese francophone perspective and a colonial perspective regardinginterracial relationships. In particular, this study investigates the reasons why both novelsdepict failed relationships and furthermore proposes that the failure of mixed-racerelationships is connected to a complex interplay of sexual, racial and legal aspects in thecolonial context.
