[摘要] ENGLISH SUMMARY: One of the most important functions of the GrootfonteinAgricultural Development Institute is theprovision of an effective information service to thefarmers of the Karoo region. Because of existingproblems in the traditional information service forfarmers, an information bank was created by the AnimalProduction section to facilitate and expedite informationtransfer.The purpose of this study was to determine theinformation needs of the extensive stock farmers ofthe Karoo region and to define the possible role ofthe Animal Production Information Bank in satisfyingthese information needs.The information needs were determined with the aid ofa comprehensive postal questionnaire which was sent to1332 extensive stock farmers in the Karoo region. Datafrom 563 correctly completed questionnaires were used.After subjecting the Animal Production InformationBank to a set of evaluation criteria, it was concludedthat the information bank could play an important rolein solving some of the problems experienced with informationtransfer to farmers.The information needs of the extensive stock farmersof the Karoo region were expressed first in terms ofmain subjects and then as individual subjects. Aftercomparing the subject scope of the Animal ProductionInformation Bank with the information needs of thestock farmers, deficits in the scope were pointed out.If these deficits in scope could be covered, the. Animal Production Information Bank could play animportant role in satisfying the information needs ofthe Karoo region's extensive stock farmers and insupplying an optimal information service.
