Die verskillende verskyningsvorme van narratiewe poesie by Charl-Pierre Naudé en Loftus Marais
[摘要] ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Narrative poetry has been practiced by poets since the origin of Afrikaans literature. With the course of time, the nature and the function of narrative poetry changed although the narrative element was always present in the poetry, to a greater or a lesser extent. Since the beginning of the 2000s there has been a revival in narrative poetry that led to several debates on the value of the narrative poetry as well as a research project that sought to theorize the narrative element in lyrical poetry. In this thesis, I argue that the narrative element has always been present in different forms and to different degrees in poetry. This thesis investigates the different forms of narrative poetry in the work of Charl-Pierre Naudé and Loftus Marais, Afrikaans poets who both write narrative poetry. This is done by looking at Naudé and Marais' second collections, In die geheim van die dag (2004) and Kry my by die gewone plek aguur (2012). It was found that narrative elements are present in both poets' work, but that it takes many forms. In Naudé's work, the narrative is found in individual poems. The story in the relevant poems becomes the image or metaphor. By foregrounding the story, the lyrical techniques are concealed giving rise to the illusion that the poem is the experience itself. The narrative in Marais' work extends over the course of the collection, while individual poems are more concerned with specific narrative elements such as time and space. The narrative becomes a space that enhances the lyrical dimension of the poem. It was also found that although both collections have a strong narrative approach, characteristics of lyrical poetry are also present in both. The narrative and the lyric do not just appear alongside one another, but they also have a significant influence on each other.
