The Ontario Veterinary College after World War II: 1945–1953
[摘要] After the Second World War (WWII) ended, an unprecedented number of students enrolled at the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC), creating the largest classes ever to study at the OVC. Although the greatly expanded student body tested the limits of the College and its faculty and facilities, the OVC implemented innovative solutions to cope with the increased enrollment. The hundreds of new students, most of whom were veterans, experienced a rich social and academic life at the OVC despite the crowded conditions. Using material from the archives records at the University of Guelph, published memoirs, and interviews with OVC alumnae (veterans and non-veterans), this paper examines the Ontario Veterinary College in the post WWII period from 1945 to 1953. Before the interviews were conducted, ethical clearance was obtained from the University of Guelph Research Ethics Board. Although a brief description of OVC after WWII was provided in F. Eugene Gattinger’s history of the first 100 years of the OVC (1), the emphasis was more on college leadership, particularly the OVC principals. In the present paper, analysis of the changes in personnel and facilities and description of the student experience provide an in-depth presentation of the postwar period at the OVC.
