Postpartum-depressie en verbandhoudende faktore by Sotho- en Zoeloe-moeders
[摘要] ENGLISH SUMMARY: The main aim of the present study was to identify possible related factors relatedto postpartum depression in black South African women. Following a survey ofthe literature, certain potential related factors, investigated by previousresearchers, were grouped into five categories, i.e. demographic, biological, obstetric and interpersonal factors, as well as personal histories of depressiveepisodes.Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted in a sample of 97 Sotho andZulu women, between two and 24 weeks postpartum. For the interviews aquestionnaire was used which included items referring to factors potentiallyrelated to postpartum depression. The questionnaire also included a shortenedversion of the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). The questionnaire wastranslated in Sotho. The sample was divided in a depressed group (n = 63) and anon-depressed group (n = 34) on the basis of their BDI scores. The two groupswere compared statistically in terms of potential related factors.Concerning demographic factors, the two groups differed significantly in terms ofunplanned pregnancy, marital status and financial security. No significantdifferences were found between the two groups regarding age, parity and·housing problems have been found. In terms of biological factors, i.e. premenstrual tension and breast-feeding, nosignificant differences were found between the depressive and non-depressivegroups.Obstetric factors, i.e. previous miscarriages and/or stillbirths and Caesareanbirths, did not discriminate significantly between depressed and non-depressedsubjects.As to interpersonal relationships the depressive and non-depressive groupsdiffered significantly in terms of marital satisfaction and social support, but nosignificant difference was found in the relationship with their mother figure.Concerning the history of previous depressive episodes, previous postpartumdepressive episodes correlated significantly with present postpartum depression. The two groups did however not differ significantly in terms of histories of non-postpartumdepressive episodes.
