Van drama na draaiboek : 'n vertaalteoretiese beskouing van die herskrywing van Faan se trein uit dramateks in draaiboek
[摘要] ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this thesis translation strategies were applied and investigated in the film adaptation of Faan se trein (Fourie 1975) from play to shooting script to film (2014). The analysis is done from a descriptive translation approach and the film adaptation model of Lawrence Venuti (2007) in his article 'Adaptation, translation, critique is applied to the texts. Die purpose of this study is to establish whether the function of the source text was translated into the target text and the manner in which said function changed during the adaptation process. The focus of this research was on the structural shifts (macro elements) and the thematic shifts (micro elements) of the film adaptation. The introductory chapter is followed by a theoretical discussion of the most prominent translation theories applicable to this research. The map of translation theory by Holmes (in Toury 1995) were discussed by applying specific theories such as André Lefevere's rewriting and manipulation theory (1992) and cultural norms by Gideon Toury (1995). The film adapation theories of Patrick Catrysse (1992) and Brian McFarlane (1996) as well as the concept of intersemiotic translation by Roman Jakobson (1963) were further discussed by applying them to the above translation theories. The practical application of the structural shifts during the rewriting process were discussed in the following chapter. In this practical application the narrative structure were identified, the terms transporation and adaptation were discussed and as such applied to the story, plot, characterisation and the spatiality, both physical and atmospheric, of the source text and the film.In the last practical chapter the thematic shifts are discussed. Several scenes from the play are compared to the scenes in the film in order to see how the adaptation process are influenced by ideological, economical and political factors in the target culture. The cultural norms and convensions of the rewriter and the audience are also discussed in this chapter to establish the way in which the interpretation of story elements are adapted to the target text. In light of the above-mentioned, the conclusion can be drawn that Faan se trein was adapted with the intention to keep the function of the source text in the target text. This study however showed that both the semiotic differences between the different mediums and the cultural, ideological and political contexts between the source and target text can lead to functional differences in the film to function optimally in the target culture.
