Tragic expression in selected Xhosa literary works

[摘要] ENGLISH SUMMARY: This study Jives an exposion of how the tragic is expressed inXhosa. A selection of written works is examined. As a startingpoint the Aristotelian approach is given but the work emphesisesthe world view of amaXhosa as the way of looking at tragedy and thetragic. The tragic is taken to be prevalent during a time oftransition when there is a clash of values between parents andtheir offspring. The clash of values takes place within a familyenvironment so that there is a severance of filial bonds. This isaccompanied by serious tensions within the family. The family isthus taken as a tragic milieu. An examination of the tragic as manifested in conflict, characterisation and emotional intensity isundertaken.
