[摘要] ENGLISH SUMMARY: The main purpose of this study was to determine the task ofrugby and netball captains as perceived by team members. Itwas also decided to ascertain whether the task of rugby andnetball captains differs and secondly, whether players'requirements of these captains differ at school, universityand provincial level.After studying the relevant literature and existingquestionnaires, a questionnaire consisting of 52 items wascompiled. These items were analized and a finalquestionnaire comprising of 37 items was developed todetermine a captain's expected personal traits, generalbehaviour and contingent behaviour in specific situations.The final questionnaire was completed by 261 players. Theresults of this study suggests that there are no significantdifferences between rugby or netball players' perceptions ofa captain's task nor between their requirements of theircaptain. Players expect their captain to be task as well asrelationship oriented. The captain must possess the personalcharacteristics of self-confidence, inner drive, goodcommunication skills and a positive disposition. Age andgender of the players may possibly play a role in therequirements a captain has to meet at the different levels ofparticipation.
