Sportlui se kognitiewe en emosionele belewing van beserings
[摘要] ENGLISH SUMMARY: This research sought to extend the existing scientific literature regarding the psychologicaleffect of injuries. According to the related literature sportspersons react differentlyto injuries. A number of models are used in the description of the reaction toinjuries of which Kubler-Ross's model (1969) is most cited.Interviews were conducted with 21 sportspersons who competed on at least provinciallevel. They represented different age groups, sport types, genders and cultural groups. All the sportspersons were unable to compete in competitive sport due to injury for atleast two months.A semi-structured interview guide was used during the interviews. Psychology-basedliterature as it pertained to the experience of loss and models of injury response, as wellas existing qualitative methodological sources, and the researcher's own experience ofworking with people who suffered losses, were used in the composition of the interviewguide. The injury process was divided into different phases, namely:• Pre-injury phase• Injury phase• Treatment decisions and planning phase• Early rehabilitation phase• Late rehabilitation phase• Return to competitionA pilot study was conducted with two injured sportsmen. The purpose of the pilot interviewwas to ensure that the interview questions were tapping into the appropriate informationand that the questions were clear. Changes were made and the interview guidewas presented to psychologists in order to verify the contents. All the interviews were tape-recorded and transcribed verbatim. The QSR NUD*ISTcomputer programme, specifically designed to manage qualitative data, was used in the coding and analysis of the data. Triangulation was used to ensure the validity of thecoded data and analyzed data. A fellow psychologist with an interest in sport was used inthe process of triangulation for the coding of the data and data analysis. The sportspersons reacted differently to injuries. These differences were also evidentwithin the different phases of the injury management process. The injured sportspersonsidentified different types of losses experienced during the different phases. A number offactors affecting their cognitions and emotions during the different phases of the injurymanagement process were identified. Their perception and the degree of the experiencedloss, as well as the cognitive and emotional reactions were largely influenced by themeaning that sport participation has for them. A number of advantages related to beinginjured were also identified. The purpose of the research was reached through the identification of the different cognitiveand emotional reactions to injuries within the different phases of the injury managementprocess.
