Die seinsisteem as leswaarnemingsinstrument in die opleiding van onderwysers
[摘要] ENGLISH ABSTRACT: There are few teaching issues which have elicited as much debate as the evaluation of teachers.A review of the literature reveals an increasing concern about the validity and reliability used todetermine the quality of the teaching skills of teachers. This concern has given rise to renewedinterest in the evaluation of teachers and the development of new teacher evaluation systems.It is obvious that the set outcomes within the outcomes-based approach to teacher education inSouth Africa, formulated in terms of roles and associated competencies, should be carefullyassessed. Observation of teacher behaviour will increase in importance - thus the availability ofreliable and valid observation instruments. The effectiveness of the guidance offered to teachersand student teachers is largely dependent on the quality of the data gathered during observation.This research consists of two components, namely a literature review and a survey. using aquestionnaire. An argument is made for the need for more effective instruments to observeteaching behaviour and lesson analysis of student teachers during practice teaching.To test the usefulness of the sign system employed in this study, the instrument was used by tenlecturers during teaching opportunities. After observation of student teachers, a meeting with therelevant lecturers was arranged, where data generated by the instrument, were discussed.Lecturers and students completed a questionnaire concerning the usefulness of the observationinstrument. The finding was that lecturers and the students observed found the sign system areliable lesson observation instrument, that could be usefully and valuably used by lecturers togather information in a didactic situation.The usefulness of the instrument lies in the fact that the information generated can assiststudents to plan lessons more effectively. Shortcomings can be identified more precisely andformulated whilst the marks alloted can be improved.With the greater focus on outcomes based education and the importance of skills in this regard,it has become imperative to review the instruments used to determine the teaching skills ofstudent teachers. The sign system as an observation format can make a valuable contribution tothis end.
