OBJECTIVES: To analyze the patients'adherence after endoscopic resection of polyps with adenomas.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: 74 patients who have been undergone to colonoscopyand have presented polyps with adenomas were evaluated. These patients havebeen oriented to do colonoscopy control which has varied in time according tothe number of adenomas, diameter and histological classification. Besides theappointment orientation, the patients have been informed through phone callsduring the period indicated for colonoscopy control.
RESULTS: From October 2000 to April 2006, 74 patients have been followed,51% of them were male and the average age was 52. The adherence to colonoscopycontrol in this group has been 82%, among the female group 94% and in the male71%, showing a significant statistical difference (P< 0,05). In relationto the age range there has not been statistical difference among the groups, however, with a tendency to a minor adherence in the group over 60 which couldbe confirmed with the sample increase.
CONCLUSION: Due to the polyps with adenomas recurrence after the firstpolypectomy, it has been indicated to these patients periodical follow up. Colonoscopyfollowed by polypectomy of the adenomas injuries has been the best tool forthe colorectal cancer prevention in these subjects. This study demonstratesthat male patients have got a minor acceptance to endoscopic follow up, indicatingmeasures that promote a major adherence of that group to this kind or prevention.
