Die ontwikkeling van die Suid-Afrikaanse nywerheidsektor en 'n kritiese evaluering van die huidige beleid
[摘要] ENGLISH ABSTRACT : According to endogenous growth theory, a country's economic growth rate is influenced by government policy. Industrial policy is important for influencing the sources of growth, because it influences the sector which has become known as the engine of growth. Government intervention in the South African industrial sector has started as early as 1924. Many of the reasons for government intervention in the past had their origin in reasons that was not necessarily best for the industrial sector. That resulted in a capital intensive, inward looking and unproductive sector. Since the democratic elected government came into power in 1994, the objectives have changed, but industrial policy is still being used as an instrument to reach social rather than economic goals. It is argued in the study that the government is too involved in the industrial sector. It is not only correcting market failures, but it also tries to influence the direction ofdevelopment. Some of the intervention is done to correct unbalances resulting fromthe previous government's interventions, but again, this is not what is best for theindustrial sector and for the economy as a whole.
