The unifying theme has been a relentless effort to incorporate scientific rigor into the practice of pulmonary medicine, replacing anecdote and dogma with evidence-based decision-making in such diverse areas as the timing of tracheostomy, management of pleural effusion, and palliative and end-of-life care. Expanding this effort beyond individual diseases and specific management issues, he has championed the cause of introducing rigorous methodologies into the development of clinical practice guidelines.
