A Moment of Márquez

[摘要] What do I say to the blindingly fresh young woman to whom I am held and to whom I hold myself responsible to tutor, to guide, to shape, and—would that it were not so— to serve as a model for our profession? I cannot tell her that her ways are sweet and kind or that her manner is gracious or that her smile is a sunny day in this Iowa of winters. I would say, “You are not only who you think you are.” Time is a poor teller that denies compass for the tale; principals must rehearse. For a full-spun tale, each sound must echo; each light, reflect; each star, explode; each soul, be borne again.
