High Stakes: Direct to Consumer Marketing of Unproven Stem Cell Treatments for Lung Disease
[摘要] Patients frustrated with chronic debilitating pulmonary conditions are increasingly seeking out stem cell treatments marketed by so-called stem cell clinics. In contrast with the rigorous testing performed on traditional pharmaceuticals, marketing of these stem cell treatments relies heavily on patient testimonials, misrepresentations, and false or unproven data. Exaggerated claims of safety and efficacy are presented with weak or absent scientific rationale. Although these treatments are portrayed as routine, their true risks and benefits remain unknown.
