Paradigms to facilitate autonomy in resident education
[摘要] Autonomy, the ability to independently take care of patients and perform procedures, has long been an important theme in surgical education. It is an essential element of the transition from supervised training to independent practice. Historically, the surgical apprenticeship model granted trainees a high level of autonomy, and residents functioned with little oversight. Over the last few decades, however, concerns about patient safety and risk management have driven changes in billing regulations and duty-hour restrictions. Consequently, the amount of direct supervision has increased and the perceived level of autonomy has declined for surgical trainees.
