A hypothesized frontier between hunter-gatherers and farmers in the Eastern Free State
[摘要] Previous research in the southern highveld of South Africa established the southern boundary ofagriculturist stone walled settlement in the lower Caledon Valley. This study assesses theevidence for interaction between hunter-gatherers and agriculturists in the resulting middleCaledon Valley fro.itier zone from a hunter-gatherer perspective, using archaeological data andhistorical accounts. To obtain the archaeological data three rock shelters were excavated; OrangeSprings, Rooikrans and Westbury. Data from sites in the frontier zone excavated by otherresearchers is also considered in this study. These sites include Rose Cottage Cave, Roosfontein,Mauermanshoek and Tandjiesberg.
