Education for self-reliance in Lesotho 1974-1990
[摘要] Education for self-reliance in Lesotho is bound up with theeducational developments in independent Africa that sought a morepractical and relevant type of education as a solution to anovertly academic and western inclined education. This studyexamines Lesotho's experiences with education for self-reliancein the context of underdevelopment and dependence on the west andSouth Africa. The main argument of this study is that inadequateimplementation procedures and methods tended to discredit theconcept of education for self-reliance in Lesotho. However, thestudy demonstrates that with more appropriate principles andprocedures, education for self-reliance could be an effective and viable option for minimising underdevelopment and dependence inLesotho. In addition, this study argues that particular aspectsof education for self-reliance such as development studies couldencourage broad-based and collective development. For thispurpose, lessons from Tanzania and Botswana are of crucialimportance.The study draws on both primary and secondary sources. Primarysources include reports, official policy documents, oral evidenceand official pamphlets on educational development in Lesotho.Secondary sources are a combination of books, journals andnewspapers which cover topical issues on education anddevelopments in Africa.
