Listening to the Voice for orchestra
[摘要] Listening to the Voice is a piece written for a full orchestra The ;;voice;; is a melody based on a folk tune from Shanxi province in China. I used two pentatonic scales to build up the ;;voice;;; B-D-E-F#-A; and C-Eb-F-G-Bb. The form alternates between two ideas; the first is a textural idea, which is based on the melody; and the second is the melody itself. The climax combines both ideas. The melody acts as a ritornello theme, entering at first as an oboe solo, later contrapuntally in the woodwinds. These ritornelli alternate with episodes that grow out of the introductory material until they combine with the melody for the first climax. This is interrupted by a solo string variation on the melody, with woodwinds entering contrapuntally, and building until the tutti returns at the end.
