Descubrimiento de las propiedades oncogénicas de los antígenos MAGE

[摘要] Since its discovery as antigens in human melanoma cells, the view of MAGE proteins (Melanoma Antigen GEnes) has greatly varied. They switched from promising antigens to develop anti-cancer vaccines to conclude that its expression is associated with tumor promotion, and probably both characteristics are true. Starting with the attractive model of proteins expressed in tumors that inhibit the p53 oncosuppressor, different mechanisms have been demonstrated by which different MAGE proteins contribute to the tumor phenotype. This article begins with a historical review of the MAGE proteins and then stops at the main discoveries that led to characterize these proteins as potential oncogenes.
