Disfunción, actividad y disactividad proteica: estudios de la proteína E7 del virus del papiloma mediante biología molecular reversa

[摘要] I review several concepts commonly applied to proteins in biological research at various scales, using the papillomavirus E7 protein as an example. I discuss the traditional concepts of activity and function (more accurately termed disfunction), together with the complementary concepts of process and disactivity. While process and activity are positive definitions, dysfunction and dysactivity are negative definitions. Next, I use these four definitions to discuss the research approaches of physiology, molecular/cell biology, biochemistry/biophysics and systems biology. I propose that direct molecular biology takes processes as a starting point to do research towards dysfunctions, activities and dysactivities. In a complementary manner, I can define reverse molecular biology as a research that takes dysactivities as a starting point and progresses towards activities, dysfunctions and, finally, processes.
