Post audit modeling of remedial clean up of a chlorinated hydrocarbon plume
[摘要] In 1984, a computer modeling study of a groundwater recovery system was conducted on a trichloroethylene (TCE) plume at an industrial site, using the USGS Solute Transport model. Since that time, the recovery well system has been in operation for three years. This thesis reviews the collected monitoring data in light of the current research on volatile organic compounds regarding solute transport mechanisms, sampling and analytical procedures and the reliability of computer modeling. The findings indicate the original modeling study accurately predicted remediation of the high TCE concentrations during the first year of operation, but was less reliable for predicting low level contaminant removal in the subsequent years. Revisions to the computer model better achieved the observed potentiometric surfaces and general plume movement. Review of the total volatile plume found disparities between the response of the TCE plume and the other constituents. (Abstract shortened with permission of author.)
